(From the Jan. 18, 2001 edition of the Inland Register)

In 1950, Bishop Charles D. White was consulted by Jean Thorpe, a Catholic business woman who was then working at Pacific Telephone Company, with the idea of forming a philanthropic group of professional and working women of the Spokane Catholic community. Bishop White welcomed the idea and promptly commissioned Jesuit Father Erwin Toner to be the groupís moderator.

The first meeting was in January 1951 with charter members Jean Thorpe, Beth Riley, Josepha Herboth, Isabelle Schaaf, Maria Masterson, Eileen Pierce, Nettie Herrman and Mary Margaret Diederich.

In 1952 Father Toner was posted to Portland by the Jesuits, so Bishop White appointed Father David Rosage to be the groupís moderator.

The main object behind the formation of the group was to create and perpetuate associations with other Catholic women and to encourage the study and activities of the Faith.

By 1957 the groupís main philanthropic project was in helping to underwrite and to aid in the fund-raising for Immaculate Heart Retreat House, which Father Rosage was then engaged in bringing to fruition. The women even gave of their time and energy to paint and clean and get the Retreat House ready for guests as it was being completed.

As time passed and the Retreat House was no longer in so great a need, the group has supported music scholarships which have now given way to the awarding of two $750 scholarships each year. The scholarships are awarded to local Catholic Women who have a need for funds, who are in their second year of college in or near Spokane, and who have 3.5 grade point average or above.

The first projects used to raise funds were musical events and a pre-Christmas auction. The members still hold a pre-Christmas auction as well as host a ďFun and Games DayĒ Luncheon as fund-raisers.

The groupís birthday meeting will be on Jan. 27. The moderator is still Msgr. David Rosage, who will give a spiritual message for the Jan. 27 meeting.

The meeting begins with an 11:30 a.m. social hour, with lunch at noon, at Rockwood Lane, just behind Sacred Heart Church, at 10th and Cowley, near Rockwood Blvd.

All former members as well as prospective members are invited to make reservations to attend by calling 489-3423.
