Scott Cooper of Spokane has been hired as Director of Parish Social Ministries, replacing Holy Names Sister Mary Medved.

Cooper began his new job Jan. 2.

He comes to the work with experience gained through his service with the St. Vincent de Paul Society and, more recently, with Second Harvest Food Bank. He also spent two years as a Jesuit Volunteer in Nome, Alaska.

He also has taught French part-time at Gonzaga University.

Cooper holds a master’s degree from the University of Washington and is a graduate as well of Gonzaga University.

“It is my experience that many people in our parishes are ‘hungry’ — being called to serve the poor and the marginalized. The challenge is to develop a variety of ways to answer this call,” he said. “People have so many skills and talents.”

The PSM, sponsored by Catholic Charities, is a resource for parishes in the area of social justice education, advocacy, community organizing and volunteer outreach opportunities.

Among his duties will be oversight of the local efforts for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, Respect Life, Catholic Relief Services and the HIV/AIDS Care Team project.
