Annual Catholic Appeal: Bishop requests support from Catholics
the Inland Register
(From the Feb. 8, 2001 edition of the Inland Register)
Every year Bishop Skylstad asks each parish in the Diocese to do its part toward funding his ministry and the operation of the Diocese through the Annual Catholic Appeal. Goals are established for every parish community. The goals represent the parish’s fair share of supporting the continued operation of the Diocesan offices.
When the members of a parish make their pledge to the Annual Catholic Appeal, whether the envelope is placed in the collection basket at Mass or mailed directly to the Appeal Office, that pledge is counted toward the goal set for the parish. Each pledge that is recorded brings the parish community closer to reaching the goal and, in turn, helps the Diocese of Spokane reach the goal for the Appeal.
Reaching the goal for the Appeal is important to Bishop Skylstad. He relies upon the generosity of the people of the Diocese to provide for the operation of the Church in Eastern Washington. The Annual Catholic Appeal is the single, largest source of funds that he uses to carry out his ministry. It provides 40 percent of the operating funds used by the Diocese. Without the support of the people of the Diocese, the bishop would not be able to successfully carry out his ministry.
Everyone’s gift is needed to reach the Appeal goal. Ordinarily, less than half of the registered Catholic households in the Diocese make a contribution. “I am very grateful to everyone who has supported the Appeal in the past,” Bishop Skylstad said recently. “When caring people see how important their contribution is to the Church in carrying out Christ’s mission on earth, they willingly offer their support.”
Please remember to bring your Appeal gift to Mass on February 10-11 or mail it to the Appeal office. Help us to reach our goal.
