Brother Maurice C. Paquet SJ

Jesuit Brother Maurice Paquet died March 9 in the Jesuit infirmary in Spokane. He was 92 years old and had been a member of the Society of Jesus since 1940.

A wake was held March 14. The funeral Mass was celebrated the next morning in Christ the King Chapel, Jesuit House, Gonzaga University. Burial was at Mt. St. Michaelís.

He was born in Canada but educated in Seattle. He studied at the University of Washington, Seattle College (now University), and the American Institute of Banking.

Much of his life as a Jesuit involved utilization of his financial training and skills in assignments in the Northwest, including St. Michael Philosophate in Spokane, the Oregon Province Provincialís office, the Jesuit Novitiate in Portland, and Jesuit High School, Portland.

He retired to Jesuit House in 1994 and began his final ministry, full-time prayer for the Church and the Society of Jesus.

Sister Barbara (M. Jane Christine) Hand SNJM

Sister Barbara Hand, a Sister of the Holy Names, died March 10 at the age of 70.

The funeral Mass was celebrated March 17 in the chapel of the Convent of the Holy Names in Marylhurst, Ore.

She was born in Santa Monica, Calif. She graduated from Immaculate High School in Seattle and Marylhurst College, and held a masterís degree in education from the Oregon College of Education.

For 32 years she taught in elementary schools throughout Oregon and Washington, including Spokane. Later ministries included work with Providence Home Health Care.
