Sister Marian Gertrude (Florence) Fallert SNJM

Sister Marian Gertrude Fallert of the Sisters of the Holy Names died April 15.

The funeral Mass was celebrated in the chapel of the Convent of the Holy Names in Marylhurst, Ore., April 21.

She was born in 1914 in Clyde, Idaho. She graduated from Holy Names Academy, Seattle, in 1933 and entered the Holy Names novitiate the next year.

Sister Marian Gertrude served in a variety of ministries over the years. In Oregon, she worked in food service at St. Mary School, The Dalles; Christie School and St. Mary Academy, Portland; and Marylhurst College, Marylhurst, as well as Holy Names College in Spokane.

She later worked in the Schoen Library at Marylhurst College, mending and binding books.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Sisters of the Holy Names Ministry/Retirement Fund, Convent of the Holy Names, P.O. Box 411, Marylhurst, OR 97036.

Sister Gonzaga (Rosette) Letter OSB

Benedictine Sister Gonzaga (Rosette) Letter, age 99, died of illness relating to age at the Monastery of St. Gertrude, Cottonwood, Idaho, on April 23.

The vigil service was April 25. The funeral Mass was celebrated the following day.

She was born at Oberageri, Switzerland, in 1902. At the age of 19 she set sail for America with Mother Hildegard Vogel and 22 other young women. She professed her vows as a Benedictine Sister on March 18, 1923.

Her main ministry was teaching, first in elementary schools in Idaho and, in the Spokane Diocese, in Pomeroy and Colton. In 1926 her career as a high school teacher began at Greencreek public school; she later taught at St. Gertrude Academy, Cottonwood, for 17 years.

Besides teaching typing and shorthand, she kept convent records, created works of art, especially with dried flowers, and calligraphy. She was also the Academy librarian for several years.
