the Inland Register

(From the Aug. 23, 2001 edition of the Inland Register)

Kaufer’s Religious Supplies of Spokane presents its annual Liturgy and Music Series in September and October, in Spokane and Lewiston.

Composers and musicians for this year’s series are Marty Haugen, in Spokane on Sept. 21 and 22, and Dan Schutte, in Lewiston, Idaho on Oct. 5 and 6.

Haugen’s appearances are co-sponsored by Kaufer’s and St. Augustine Parish.

For the past 20 years, Marty Haugen has presented hundreds of workshops and concerts across the North and Central America, Europe, Asia and the Pacific Rim. He has over 29 recordings and more than 400 separate printed editions available through GIA Publications, including such well-known songs as “Canticle of the Sun,” “Eye Has Not Seen,” “Gather Us In,” Mass of Creation, “Shepherd Me O God,” “We Remember” and “We Walk By Faith.”

Haugen will be in concert Friday, Sept. 21, at 7:30 p.m. There will be no charge for the concert, but a freewill offering will be taken. The following morning he will present a workshop from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., with registration beginning at 8:30 that morning.

Both events will take place at St. Augustine Church, located at 428 W. 19th Ave. in Spokane.

Dan Schutte has been composing music for worship for 30 years. One of his most renowned works, “Here I Am, Lord,” is used widely and sung by many Christian denominations.

Some of his other well-known songs came about during his years of collaborations with the St. Louis Jesuits: “Glory and Praise to Our God,” “Blest Be the Lord,” “City of God,” and “Only This I Want.”

He brings a wealth of educational and musical experience to his compositions and workshops.

His appearances in the Inland Northwest are co-sponsored by Kaufer’s and the Catholic parishes of Clarkston — Holy Family Parish — and Lewiston, Idaho.

Schutte will be in concert Friday, Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, at 21st St. at 13th Ave. in Lewiston. Saturday, Oct. 6, he will be presenting a workshop at St. James Church at 1519 Ripon St., Lewiston, Idaho.
