Pullman youth invest summer hours in ‘back-yard mission’ project

The youth group at Sacred Heart Parish in Pullman travels to Mexico every other year, to work with the poor as a summer mission project.
This year was a stay-at-home year, and thanks to a suggestion from Sacred Heart’s pastor, Father Edgar Borchardt, the teens worked on a mission project right in their own back yard, cleaning the property and painting the home of a low-income Pullman resident.
Thirteen young people worked eight-hour days on the fix-it-up project during a week in mid-June. Nine adults, including youth leader June Brown, also lent their expertise.
Bev (her last name was unavailable) was the grateful recipient of the group’s efforts. “She was shocked,” said Brown, “that someone would do this for her.” Bev had been renting the house but is in the process of buying it.
The group cleaned ivy off her house; cut, pulled and hauled off weeds and other yard waste; and cut down two trees. They helped prepare a small unused trailer home on her property to be moved out, and then reinforced the carport under which the trailer had been parked. They also spread five yards of gravel.
When all that was finished, the group painted the house a bright blue – Bev’s choice. Several teens said they had the most fun spray-painting the house. Brown’s photos show young people with blue hair and blue arms as well.
The youth group used some of the money from their treasury to buy supplies and rent equipment. Some donations were also received to help out.
It wasn’t all work, though. The group took time for fun during the week, enjoying an ice-cream social one night and a pizza feed another night.
Young people who worked on the project were Robi Bose, Rachael Brown, Tom Brown, Lizzy Dutton, Elizabeth Hawbaker, Jeanette Johnson, Kenneth Jussaume, Chelsea Minogue, Katie Murray, Dan Quock, Lindsay Quock, Gwynne Thompson, and Hailey Hudson.
Adults were Brian Canfield, Dave Coghran, Marcie Vergara, Becky Broghammer, Carina Stillman, Mike and Rexan Heston, Dan McGreevy and youth leader June Brown.
