Merri Lou Dobler — dietician, catechist, and former food columnist for the Spokesman-Review, Spokane’s daily newspaper — will be leading “What’s Cooking? Retreat to the Kitchen Workshop” on Thursday, Nov. 8, at Clare Center, south of Spokane at 4624 E. Jamieson Rd.

Kitchens come in many shapes and sizes and become, for many people, a place to retreat from other areas of the home. There is an undeniable serenity to this quiet place early in the morning. There are minutes of busyness and moments of excitement when family members burst into this space to help with a delicious meal. And there are those quiet occasions later in the evening when important conversations find their way into this sacred space which is the kitchen.

Intimate conversations with God take place here too, in the midst of kitchen work, alone with pots and pans or together with children. Kneeling down to wipe up cookie crumbs from the floor or reaching up to a cupboard for a can of soup, people can connect with others and with God. At times like that “We can focus on what makes us feel good in the kitchen, what opens our heart to Jesus’ ever-present love, what brings up feelings of gratitude and comfort,” said Dobler. “We can consciously seek these positive experiences and reflect on their deeper meaning. We can create a place where our senses are saturated and where a peacefulness envelopes us, where we find each other in a new way.”

“What’s Cooking? Retreat To The Kitchen Workshop” is being held Thursday, Nov 8, from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the Clare Center, Spokane. The day will “reflective,” with a focus on “knowing your kitchen, knowing yourself,” she said.

Preregistration by Nov. 1; call 448-4887 or e-mail for information.
