Deacon Jerry McKenzie: 1920-2001

Deacon Jerry McKenzie, ordained June 3, 1978 for the Diocese of Spokane, died Oct. 4 in Woodburn, Ore., where he had lived for the last 11 years.

A memorial Mass was celebrated Oct. 12 at St. Thomas More Parish, Spokane. Inurn-ment followed at Holy Cross Mausoleum.

He was born in Spokane July 28, 1920. He married his wife, Jean, in 1948.

After service in the Army during World War II, Deacon McKenzie worked in retail furniture sales.

As a deacon, his ministry took place in several parishes and organizations, including St. Aloysius and St. Thomas More parishes in Spokane, as well as parishes in Boise and Woodburn.

In 1979 Bishop Lawrence Welsh assigned him to work with in family ministry through the diocese’s Family Life Office.

He retired in 1982.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; sons Donald (Spokane), Robert (Spokane), John (Placenta, Calif.), and Timothy (Tacoma, Wash.); daughter Molly Thola (Liberty Lake, Wash.); a sister, Elizabeth Myhre of Astoria, Ore.; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or St. Luke Church, 417 Harrison, Woodburn, OR 97071.
