(From the Oct. 25, 2001 edition of the Inland Register)

The Basic Parish Nurses program, a ecumenical cooperative effort between Gonzaga University and the Providence Center for Faith and Healing, completed another six-day series of classes last month.

The six days of classes at Immaculate Heart Retreat Center Sept. 25-30 saw participants from throughout Washington State as well as Montana.

Twenty-one nurses completed the most recent series of classes.

The Parish Nurse training program is underwritten in large part by Sacred Heart Medical Center.

Classes are presented not only in medical matters, but also in health education, spirituality, and advocacy, reflecting the varied roles parish nurses fill within the faith community.

Parishes nurses “don’t fill the typical role of nursing,” said Susan Keyes, Coordinator of Parish Nursing at Providence Center. Working within the context of the faith community, parish nurses also engage in “health education, integration of faith and medicine, personal health counseling,” and other tasks, she said.

Among the participants were Drs. Leonard and Helen Doohan of Gonzaga University; Jo Schafer and Juli Dickelman, chaplains at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane; Father Steve Dublinski, pastor of St. Mary Parish, Spokane, and St. Joseph Parish, Rockford; and Don McKenzie, pastoral associate at St. Thomas More Parish, Spokane.
