Women and men of all religious faiths are being invited to join Catholics in a day of prayer, contemplation and fasting on Friday, Dec. 7, in one of four locations in Spokane.

The one-hour gatherings are in support of the call by the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) for the 2nd National Day of Contemplation and Fasting.

Providence Sister Kathryn Rutan, an LCWR member, said the hope is to restore “right relationships” in the church, society and the world.

The gatherings in Spokane, open to all, are planned for:

  • 10:30-11:30 a.m., Dominican Center, 3102 W. Fort Wright Drive.
  • 1-2 p.m., Convent of the Holy Names, 2911 W. Fort Wright Drive.
  • 3:30-4:30 p.m., Mount St. Joseph, 12 W. Ninth Avenue.
  • 7-8 p.m., Sacred Heart Parish Church, 19 E. Rockwood Blvd.

“I very much encourage the faithful of the diocese, especially in the city of Spokane, to attend one of the prayer gatherings in support of the Day of Contemplation,” said Bishop Skylstad. “The gift of peace from the Lord Jesus is a marvelous gift and promise. May we all work and pray hard for the fulfillment of this gift in the human family.”

The women Religious are encouraging prayers and fasting particularly for:

  • The relief of poverty and oppression.
  • A commitment to the keeping and healing of creation.
  • Care and advocacy for the world’s women and children, especially those who are abused and victimized.
  • The reconciliation of enemies, a cessation of the arms race and acts of terrorism, and a truce to all wars.
  • The healing of ethnic rivalries, racism and all forms of prejudice.
  • Respect for differing points of view, openness to dialogue, and an end to factionalism among varying faiths and within the church.
