150 Years Ago: 1851
Kettle Falls: Jesuit Father Joseph Joset of the Rocky Mountain Missions was sent to Kettle Falls to administer the sacraments to the Indians.
Palermo, Italy: Joseph Cataldo entered the Jesuit novitiate. As a priest he became a long-time missionary to the Northwest Indians and was founder of Gonzaga University.
Bavaria: James Rebmann was born in Bavaria, Germany. The future Father Rebmann was the founder and first pastor of St. Francis Xavier Parish, Spokane.
125 Years Ago: 1876
Colville: Father Urban Grassi was appointed to care for the Colville and Spokane Indians. He served in that ministry for many years.
100 Years Ago: 1901
Rockford: Father DeMalsche of Tekoa began building the first church in Rockford. It was completed several years later.
Spokane: Father Herman Goller was appointed Prefect of Studies at Gonzaga College. Father was active at the school and in local parishes until his death in Spokane in 1910.
75 Years Ago: 1926
Vatican City: Msgr. Charles White of Grand Rapids, Mich., was named the second bishop of the Diocese of Spokane.
Spokane: At Gonzaga High School, Arthur Dussault took over football coaching duties from Mike Pecarovich. GHS finished its season beating Wallace, 2-0; tying Tekoa, 0-0; beating Hillyard, 18-6; beating Chewelah, 28-0; losing to North Central, 19-30; beating Colville, 13-0; and losing to Lewis and Clark 6-21.
50 Years Ago: 1951
Uniontown: Bishop Charles White was the main celebrant at the funeral of Father Herman Loeffler, one of the last priests who had served the diocese since its founding. Father was born in Germany and was ordained for the Nesqually Diocese in 1904. He served in Walla Walla, Pomeroy, Sprague and, for 22 years, in Uniontown.
Spokane: The Altar Society of St. Francis of Assisi Parish elected new officers: Dan Landry, August Kucklick, Dennis Healy, and J.J. McGrath.
Spokane: Gonzaga Prep hosted 40 Catholic high school principals and superiors from the four Northwest states. The group elected Father Gordon Toner as its first chairman.
25 Years Ago: 1976
Colfax: More than $2,000 was collected by St. Patrick parishioners for the brain surgery of teenager Cip Bird. In charge of the fund-raising event were Al Liotta, Gary Cochran, and Sabrina Schreider.
Philadelphia: Father Martin Soden, who served the Spokane Diocese at St. Francis Xavier and Sacred Heart parishes in Spokane and at St. Genevieve Parish, Twisp, died in a nursing home in Philadelphia.
10 Years Ago: 1991
Walla Walla: DeSales High School’s football team won its first state championship, defeating Rainier High School at Seattle’s Kingdome. Pat Graham and Chad Averill made the All-State Team.
Spokane: Franciscan Father Stephen Barnufsky has been named pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Parish. As such he is returning to the parish where he was born and raised, and where his father serves as a deacon.
