Deacon Gary Franz, his wife, Pat, and their son, Loren, spent two weeks around Thanksgiving time last year working with Sisters Immaculata Burke and Marie Tolle in the mission activities sponsored by the Diocese of Spokane in Novillero, Guatemala.

Deacon Franz is one of the deacons at St. Patrick Parish, Pasco.

The Franzes were accompanied by two other members of the Secular Franciscan community in the Tri-Cities area, Laura and Lois Dahmen.

The group transported medicines donated by Pasco physicians Nemesio and Gertrude Racsa, baby clothing, sports equipment, handmade diapers, and pre-school toys, donated by members of St. Patrick Parish and individuals throughout the Tri-Cities area.

The parish also gathered over $1,000 from fund-raisers sponsored by various groups, including the Secular Franciscans, the altar society, and the Knights of Columbus.

The five worked for over two weeks on such tasks as repairing an aging walkway and the drainage system, taking advantage of what was then Guatemala’s dry season.

Helping them were three men from the village of Novillero, plus Dave Dodroe, a long-time mission volunteer from Spokane.

They also split and stacked firewood, installed a new clothes line, and sewed over 25 First Communion veils.
