150 Years Ago: 1852
Kettle Falls: Father Joset at St. Paul Mission reported that French Canadians and the Iroquois and former Hudson Bay Company employees had begun settling in the Valley. The Okanogan Indians were also coming from Fort Colville.

125 Years Ago: 1877
General Wheaton asked the aid of the missionaries to restrain the Spokane and Colville Indians from joining the rebellion of the Nez Perce Indians, lest the settlers be exterminated.
St. Regis Mission: The census shows that San Poil and Chelan Indians were still pagans. The Colville and Lake Indians are Catholic.

100 Years Ago: 1902
Pasco: Father Frederick, pastor in Prosser, would travel to Belma, Sunnyside and White Bluffs and celebrate Mass in various homes and in the local Courthouse, where Father Van de Ven had been saying Mass for the past six years.

75 Years Ago: 1927
Spokane: The sophomore class officers at Gonzaga College are Leo McGavick, John O’Hara, Richard Kilroy, Arthur McNeil, and John Maloney.
Spokane: Tailor Rosenbury’s store on Sprague and Stevens advertised their $32 men’s woolen suits in the Catholic newspaper. He was closing out “uncalled-fors” at $25.
Dublin, Ireland: The future Father Anthony Farrelly entered All Hallows Major Seminary in Dublin. After ordination, Father served many years at Coulee Dam.

50 Years Ago: 1952
Spokane: Father Joseph Grady of Mt. St. Michael’s Retreat Association proposed the need for a diocesan retreat house. The Retreat Committee proposed a suitable site with private acreage, water supply, and so forth, and a building, as planned, would cost about $200,000.

25 Years Ago: 1977
Pullman: The chancery reported Father J. Severyn Westbrook will succeed Father James Kuhns as pastor of Sacred Heart Parish. Father Westbrook has been chaplain at Fort Wright College for the past five years.
Spokane: Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Doyle of St. Aloysius Parish celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. The Mass was celebrated by Father Dom Doyle of Gonzaga Prep. The Doyles were married in Montana; they had 10 children.
Spokane: Pope Paul VI has appointed Father William Skylstad Bishop of Yakima. Father Skylstad has served at Assumption and St. Joseph Parish, and has been a teacher at Bishop White and Mater Cleri seminaries.

10 Years Ago: 1992
Spokane: Mike Doohan of the Spokane Serra Club has been appointed the president-elect of Serra International. The club promotes vocations to the priesthood and Religious life, and fosters the spiritual growth of its members.
Spokane: St. Thomas More School will host its annual Italian dinner and auction. Francis Vedelago, Vic Cipolla, and John Sicilia will cook. The auction will be handled by Roger Meyers and Gloria Ressa.
