Anniversary greetings from the Diocese of Great Falls-Billings, Mont.
by Bishop Anthony M. Milone, Bishop of Great Falls-Billings
(From the May 2, 2002 edition of the Inland Register)
It has been such a pleasure knowing and working with Bishop Skylstad for 20 of his 25 years as a bishop. His gentle smile and patient reassurance have made all of our interaction good experiences.
As bishops of the Northwest, we have gathered regularly for work, study, prayer and recreation. Bishop Skylstad has had an important part in making sure those events take place.
Being a "neighbor" from nearby Montana, it has been an inspiration to see the spirit of the clergy and people of the Diocese of Spokane. It reflects well the character of your shepherd. He leads firmly, yet gently. So many of us have enjoyed the gift he has of making everyone feel involved and respected as they share the life of the Church in faith, hope and love. In addition, he has been free and generous in extending a warm friendship to all he has encountered. Although he has traveled far and wide, he has maintained the Northwest culture of hospitality.
In spite of a very busy schedule, he has found time to keep up with technology and the modern world of electronics. In a pinch, he's always a good man to consult on mechanical and electronic trouble-shooting. I think many of us can attest to his expertise as a handyman.
We have all been proud of the service he has rendered to the wider Church by his active membership in many national committees for our Conference of Bishops. And now we all rejoice in his election as vice president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. I am happy to extend warmest greetings and congratulations from the people of Eastern Montana as Bishop Skylstad celebrates 25 years as a bishop.
