Anniversary greetings from the Diocese of Helena, Mont.

by Bishop Robert C. Morlino, Bishop of Helena, Mont.

(From the May 2, 2002 edition of the Inland Register)

It is a genuine joy to commemorate the 25 years of faithful episcopal service of Bishop William Skylstad of the Diocese of Spokane.

When I was named the Bishop of Helena, back in 1999 (I am quite a long way from my 25th as bishop) Bishop Skylstad was among the very first from the Northwest to e-mail me and then telephone words of welcome and congratulations. With all his responsibilities in the Diocese of Spokane and at our Bishops' Conference, including, now, holding the vice-presidency, he always makes time to offer a word of encouragement or sound advice.

Having never been in the Northwest, I often wondered how soon I would become comfortable in our Montana context. Bishop Skylstad made significant contributions to my own ministry from the earliest days. His approach to difficulties in the Church is always one of understanding and reconciliation, and for that inspiration I will always be grateful.

God grant you, Bishop Skylstad, health, long life, and many happy and fruitful years!
