Anniversary greetings from the Diocese of Juneau, Alaska

by Bishop Michael W. Warfel, Bishop of Juneau

(From the May 2, 2002 edition of the Inland Register)

For me, Bishop Skylstad has been a model for Episcopal ministry. He embodies all the right qualities and talents so necessary to make him an effective servant-leader for today's Church. He is generous, compassionate, caring and humble, while at the same time being a strong leader who is committed to the values of the Gospel. He clearly is a man who is deeply spiritual and who embodies in his own lifestyle the kind of commitment that truly inspires others.

Over the course of several years, I have been blessed to have had a number of visits to Spokane. During these visits, I have had the opportunity to spend quality time with Bishop Skylstad. On these visits, he has invariably invited me to accompany him on a short visit to the hospital, to stop in to talk with a retired priest, to participate in an ecumenical gathering, to meet with some students at Gonzaga University, and so forth. His deep love and concern for the people of the Diocese of Spokane is obvious.

As one of the bishops of the Region XII, I am honored to know him and to be numbered as one of his confreres.
