Anniversary greetings from the Archdiocese of Seattle

by Archbishop Alex J. Brunett, Archbishop of Seattle

(From the May 2, 2002 edition of the Inland Register)

I am happy to share in the wonderful celebration of Bishop Skylstad's 25th anniversary of episcopal ordination. He has given many years of dedicated pastoral ministry to the Catholics of the Dioceses of Yakima and Spokane.

My first opportunity to know Bishop Skylstad was when I was appointed Bishop of Helena, Mont. I came from the Midwest and did not know any of the bishops of this region. It was difficult to get established in this part of the country, with its unique history and traditions.

From the outset, Bishop Skylstad welcomed me and offered me advice and support. He would call frequently and share his insights. On occasions he would drive to Montana so that we could spend quality time together discussing the needs of the Church in the Northwest and reflecting on ways we could be effective pastoral leaders.

Since I became Archbishop of Seattle, I have had the opportunity to work closely with him as members of the Washington State Catholic Conference. During all this time he has been a devoted friend, a compassionate leader and generous in offering his pastoral presence. He is hard-working, generous with his time and filled with unstinting love for the Church and the people he serves. He is particularly proud of his Northwest heritage and worked hard to share it on many occasions, especially as chairman of our bishops' committee which wrote the pastoral letter on the Columbia River.

Together with all the Catholics from the Archdiocese of Seattle I thank God for the many gifts he brings to our important work in the State of Washington. We are grateful for all he does. May the Lord continue to bless him with health and joy in the powerful ministry he brings as Bishop of Spokane!
