Missionary’s letters collected, published

by the Inland Register

(From the June 13, 2002 edition of the Inland Register)

The work and mission of Jesuit Father Joseph Cataldo was commemorated recently in his native town of Terrasini, Sicily. The celebration was featured in an article by Father Kevin Codd in the Feb. 7, 2002 edition of the Inland Register.

The celebration continues with the publication of extensive collection of Father Cataldo’s letters. The new book, titled Padre Giuseppe Cataldo S.J.: Epistolario, was edited by Antonino Lo Nardo and was produced with the assistance and cooperation of David Kingma, archivist of the Archives of the Oregon Province of the Society of Jesus. Kingma provided Lo Nardo with access to the archives’ collection of Father Cataldo’s letters.

The book makes accessible a substantial portion of Father Cataldo’s correspondence and gives the reader a very personal insight into the life and times of its subject. It also provides extensive endnotes to each chapter which explain for the modern reader many details of the letters as well as a fine bibliography of many related resources and books.

At this time, the text is only available in Italian, though Lo Nardo hopes to prepare an English language translation in the future.

Anyone interested in ordering a copy of this important contribution to the history of Spokane and Gonzaga University may contact Lo Nardo directly by e-mail.
