the Inland Register

(From the Sept. 12, 2002 edition of the Inland Register)

The Inland Empire Catholic Charismatic Renewal (IECCR) is sponsoring a conference for spiritual growth and enrichment, set for Oct. 11-12 at the Spokane Convention Center.

The two-day conference, open to the public, develops the theme, “Abide in Me,” based on John 15:4: “Abide in me and I will abide in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.”

The Conference opens on Friday night, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m., and continues Saturday, Oct. 12, with both general sessions and breakout workshops.

Friday’s schedule is from 7-9:15 p.m. Saturday’s events run from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and again from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. for the adults, and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. for the teen track.

Most of the conference presenters are familiar faces from the Inland Northwest.

Included on that list is Holy Names Sister Sister Linda Koontz, the conference keynote speaker.

A former resident of the Spokane-Coeur d’Alene area, Sister Linda is well known nationally and throughout the Northwest for her evangelical voice. Her presentations encourage people not to be the “frozen chosen” but to step out in faith to share God’s Good News with others. Her workshop presentation answers the question, “Who is this Holy Spirit?” Sister Linda ministers among the poor in El Paso, Texas.

Father Michael Savelesky, pastor of Spokane’s Assumption Parish and well-known for his column on spirituality in the Inland Register and his recent book, Catholics Believe, will address people’s fears concerning the recent challenges within the Catholic Church. His talk, “The Holy Spirit in Times of Trial,” will touch upon the action of the Holy Spirit and faithfulness to God’s unfolding plan of salvation in the world.

A workshop by Ramona Salvatore and Carol Krum will address the topic of joy as a sign of God’s presence. Assisting them in prayer and worship will be musicians Denise and Jim Mannino, from the music group Anawim.

Andi and Ernie McGoran will address the misconception that joyful, charismatic worship is at odds with quiet contemplation in their workshop titled, “Charismatic AND Contemplative.”

In conjunction with the main conference, a Catholic Teen Conference presented by REACH Youth Ministries of Yakima will be held Saturday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., also at the Convention Center. Teens may participate in the other parts of the main conference as well. A public healing service will close the conference on Saturday evening.

Conference registration forms may be obtained through Kaufer’s Bookstore, online at http://www.cet.com/~renewal, or by phoning (509) 465-2598 (days) or (509) 276-2152 (evenings). Teens are asked to call (509) 328-0180.

Free child care for ages 2-10 will be available on-site Saturday morning and afternoon.
