Father Clifford Kossel SJ

Father Clifford Kossel of the Society of Jesus died Aug. 16 in Spokane. He was 86 years old, and had been a Jesuit for 68 years.

The funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 20 at Jesuit House on the Gonzaga University campus. Burial was at the Jesuit cemetery at Mt. St. Michael.

He was born in Omro, Wis. He entered the Jesuit novitiate at Sheridan, Ore., in 1934 and was ordained June 12, 1948, in San Francisco.

He held degrees in philosophy, including a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto; and in theology, including an STL from Alma College.

As a professor of philosophy, Father Kossel taught at Gonzaga University from 1950-52, at Mt. St. Michael from 1952-69, and again at Gonzaga from 1970-89. He was named professor emeritus of philosophy at GU in 1989.

Sister M. Rose Veronica (Viola) Hastings SNJM

Holy Names Sister Rose Veronica Hastings died Aug. 15 at the Marie-Rose Care Center of Maryís Woods at Marylhurst, Ore. She was 84 years old.

The funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 19 at the provincial house chapel at Marylhurst.

Her family lived in Deer Park, Wash., before she entered St. Mary Academy boarding school in Portland. She studied at Marylhurst College and entered the Holy Names novitiate in 1938.

She completed her degree at Marylhurst in 1940, and went on to earn a masterís degree from Seattle University.

She taught at the high school level in Oregon and Washington for several years.

In 1965 she began a long period of service as Provincial Superior and Provincial Treasurer for the Holy Names Sistersí Oregon Province. She later served in volunteer pastoral ministry at Holy Family Parish in Portland.

She retired last year.
