Over 200 children and volunteers flocked to St. Joseph Parish in Otis Orchards the last week in July for Vacation Bible School.

This year’s effort specifically targeted children who weren’t members of the parish or who were not yet active in the parish’s religious education program. About half of those who took part fit one or both of those profiles.

The program, for preschoolers through fifth grade, has blossomed in recent years. According to one VBS volunteer, “The joy that you feel when kids are still singing the songs months later, really makes you excited to plant more of those little seeds of faith again next year.” Other parents mentioned how happy they were to see their children looking up Scripture quotations.

From initial planning to the concluding family barbecue, the program was directed by parishioner Gina McCauley. The youth visualized the daily Bible lesson through skits directed by parishioner Debra Goodwin. Besides learning Scripture, the children also enjoyed Christian music and crafts. They were rewarded by “gold nuggets” for good deeds and lessons remembered. The nuggets were spent in a country store, directed by parishioner Jill Somers.

Generous financial support from donors helped provide scholarships as well as a theme-enhanced t-shirt and music CD for each of the participating families.
