Deacon Dale Schaeffer, ordained with the Spokane Diocese’s first class of permanent deacons in 1978, died Sept. 6 after a short illness.

The vigil service was Sept. 10 and the funeral Mass Sept. 11. Both took place at Assumption Parish, Walla Walla, where he had ministered as a deacon. Interment was at Mountain View Cemetery.

He was born Sept. 30, 1921, in Spokane.

Deacon Shaeffer served as a Seabee in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

He married Thelma Gareau Oct. 6, 1945.

The couple had five children.

Deacon Shaeffer was ordained June 3, 1978.

For many years he worked as a buyer for The Crescent department store in Spokane. He retired in 1984 and devoted himself to pastoral ministry.

Besides his work in Walla Walla, at one time Deacon Shaeffer was a pastoral minister for the parishes in Dayton and Waitsburg.

Initially he was assigned to the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes as a deacon. While there he worked with what was then the diocese’s Family life Office, in family ministry.

He also served the parishes in Ione and Metaline Falls, at St. Patrick in Walla Walla, and was a chaplain at Washington State Penitentiary and St. Mary Medical Center, both in Walla Walla.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma; sons Gregory, William, Joseph, and Lance; daughter Sherry; two sisters; and one brother.
