by Deacon Eric Meisfjord, Editor, Inland Register

(From the Oct. 3, 2002 edition of the Inland Register)

On Sept. 26, a complaint for damages was filed in Superior Court of the State of Washington for Spokane County. The suit was filed against the Spokane Diocese and against Pat O’Donnell.

The suit was filed on behalf of 10 persons, most of whom were identified only by their initials.

One individual is the widow of a deceased man. The suit claims the woman’s husband committed suicide, leaving a widow and three minor children, as a result of the psychological damage the man suffered as a victim of Pat O’Donnell’s sexual abuse –“profound, irreparable and devastating psychological injuries of such severity and causing such intense and prolonged pain that he could no longer endure....”

The suit is being handled by the diocese’s civil attorneys.

Bishop Skylstad is unable to comment on the suit: “I don’t want to prejudice the legal process in any way,” he said.
