‘The best is yet to come’
by Father Terence Tully, for the Inland Register
(From the Oct. 24, 2002 edition of the Inland Register)
Scouting is largely “outing” in its spelling, as has been often said. Today, as I write
this in a nursing home, I think of Scouting as more outing than ever.
A Scout can think of Outer Space not just as science fiction but a fact of history,
with names, dates, national organizations, photos, and even movies about events such as moon
landings, along with space stations and shuttle visits to them.
This information equips a Scout to go in imagination further and further, by telescope,
radio, and future possibilities to the furthest boundaries of the universe.
I am just exploring the material boundaries of the world. God is a Spirit. The angels
are spirit. The whole realm of eternity is superior to the material. The best is yet to come.
Details, we do not yet know.
We have been made for it. Our duty to God points us in this direction. My spell in this
nursing home, St. Joseph Care Center, helps me think along this line.
Meanwhile, we live in this cozy world, with its cities, lands, mountains, lakes,
oceans, and also its dangers of disasters, wars — and its splendid opportunities.
God bless us.
