Pax Christi group reactivates in Spokane Diocese
by Deacon Eric Meisfjord, Editor, Inland Register
(From the Nov. 14, 2002 edition of the Inland Register)
Pax Christi USA “strives to create a world that reflects the Peace of Christ.”
Locally, a group of individuals have begun meeting, hoping to put into practice a commitment to this same principle.
When Judy Butler attended a Pax Christi meeting in the Yakima Diocese last summer, she went in part to hear Bishop Thomas Gumbleton speak. “I was surprised to see seven or eight people from Spokane there” as well, she said. Although there had once been a local chapter of Pax Christi in Spokane, the group had not been active for several years.
“I think there are many people interested in peace, but there wasn’t an avenue for them to express that,” Butler said.
An initial meeting Oct. 22 gathered about 10 individuals. A follow-up meeting Nov. 6 at the Catholic Pastoral Center brought together about a dozen people interested in promoting peace and peace education in the larger community, in the context of the Catholic Church.
One of the first efforts by the group will be sponsorship of an Advent program on peace, scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 8, from 4-5 p.m. at St. Augustine Church, 428 W. 19th (corner of 19th and Bernard) in Spokane.
The event is titled “Prince of Peace, Clouds of War.”
Speaking will be Dr. Pat McCormick of the Religious Studies Department of Gonzaga University and Jesuit Father Dick Mercy, co-director of Kateri Northwest Ministry Institute.
As threat of war continues to loom over the United States, it’s no accident that Pax Christi is becoming active once again as a group of Catholic individuals dedicated to the cause of peace in the world.
“Very few people know that the U.S. bishops have found (attacking Iraq) to be not justified at this time,” said Butler. “That spurs us on, too.”
Pax Christi Spokane extends an invitation to anyone interested in peace issues to attend future meetings. The next three all are scheduled for Wednesdays at 4 p.m., though each will be held at a different venue. The schedule:
• Nov. 20, 4 p.m., St. Joseph Church, 1503 W. Dean, Spokane.
• Dec. 4, 4 p.m., St. Augustine Church, 428 W. 19th, Spokane.
• Dec. 18, 4 p.m., Sisters of the Holy Names, 328 E. Mission Ave., Spokane.
