After 10 years, ‘Saintly Anthony’ draws its own conclusions

by Deacon Eric Meisfjord, Editor, Inland Register

(From the Dec. 19, 2002 edition of the Inland Register)

It’s a story I’d rather not tell.

I’m sorry to report that Mark Armstrong, the writer and artist who produces the comic strip “Saintly Anthony,” has decided to discontinue the strip.

The main reason is the lack of response in the Catholic press. The strip was never enormously popular, but support has waned in the last year or so. The Inland Register is one of only a handful of papers to subscribe to Armstrong’s services. In a recent letter he termed “Saintly Anthony” an artistic, but not financial, success.

Alert readers will recall that Armstrong produced the IR’s Christmas cover last year.

Armstrong always sought to bring a note of levity to the Catholic press. Always respectful, he always seemed to work from a sense of joy, of appreciating the richness of contemporary Catholic life, but not above gently teasing a Church he clearly holds close to his heart.

He continues as a freelance cartoonist and graphic artist – he’s regularly published in secular magazines and other publications. Our loss, their gain.

Many thanks for all the ink, Mark.
