First deacon assigned to Deer Park

Deacon Dan Ritchie, ordained for the Spokane Diocese in 1994, has been assigned as deacon at St. Mary’s Presentation Parish, Deer Park.

The assignment was effective Dec. 2.

Deacon Ritchie is a chaplain on the night shift at Sacred Heart Medical Center, Spokane, where he has worked since 1992.

His previous ministry was in Sacred Heart Parish, Spokane, where he preached, taught RCIA classes, sacramental preparation, prayer services, and other liturgical ministry.

At St. Mary he anticipates involvement with the town’s community food bank, visiting the sick, especially those in long-term care at Deer Park’s hospital. He also will work with Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers to the Sick, high school religious education, and will be preaching regularly.

Deacon Ritchie was ordained Dec. 9, 1994, in Spokane by Bishop Skylstad. Before becoming a chaplain he worked in advertising sales and retail management.

He and his wife, Cathy, have been married since 1964. They have three children and seven grandchildren.
