St. Vincent de Paul Society increases assistance to needy during Christmas season

(From the Dec. 19, 2002 edition of the Inland Register)

The St. Vincent de Paul Society helped 500 children shop for Christmas gifts for their families Dec. 15.

The Society’s Spokane Thrift Store was opened special that night for the kids who each had $10 in “Vinnie Bucks” to buy presents for family members. Children who shopped were accompanied by adult volunteers who helped them make effective use of their $10. The gifts were wrapped before the children rejoined their families.

St. Vincent officials said last week that the sign-up for the Society’s Christmas boxes of food went over the 1,000 mark. At last report St. Vincent was expecting to give out about 900 boxes. Each box contains a turkey or ham and other food items. Those who are signed up will pick up the boxes the weekend before Christmas.

The Christmas food box giveaway is in addition to the 100 boxes of food St. Vincent gives out each day.
