Father Michael Krieg, a priest of the Diocese of Spokane ordained in 1982, resigned from ministry this month, effective Feb. 16.

He has been pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Spokane, since 2000. He made the announcement at Masses the weekend of Feb. 15-16.

Along with the announcement, a letter from Bishop Skylstad regarding the resignation was read to parishioners.

“It is with sadness that I have accepted the resignation of Father Mike Krieg from his ministry as a priest and your pastor,” Bishop Skylstad wrote. “He has spoken to me about his decision and I know that he has approached it carefully and with deep integrity. His presence in the presbyterate will be greatly missed.

“I thank Father Mike for his 21 years of loving service to the people of the Spokane Diocese. His ministry has been of inestimable value to the people of God in service to the Gospel.... He has also given valuable service as a member of the board of Catholic Charities.

“Be assured of my prayers for him and for you, the people of Scared Heart, as you face this time of transition.”

The bishop asked the parishioners for patience during the interim between pastors. “I assure you,” he wrote, “that the sacramental ministry of the parish will be covered.”

Father Krieg was ordained July 16, 1982, at St. Charles Parish, Spokane, by the late Bishop Lawrence Welsh.

He was born and raised in St. Maries, Idaho. Prior to his seminary formation he completed an MBA degree from the University of Idaho.

His four years of theology were completed at Mount Angel Seminary, St. Benedict, Ore., where he graduated with a master of divinity degree. He also finished an intensive course in Spanish in Cuernavaca, Mexico, prior to priestly ordination.

He was ordained to the diaconate in 1981.

Father Krieg’s first assignment was as associate pastor of St. Charles Parish.

In 1983 he moved to St. Patrick Parish, Walla Walla, as associate pastor.

In 1986 he moved back to Spokane, as associate pastor of St. Augustine Parish and as Vocations Director for the diocese.

His longest pastoral assignment was to St. Thomas More Newman Center, Pullman – 1987-2000.

After a sabbatical in 2000 he spent six months as administrator of the parishes in Davenport and Reardan.

He was named to Sacred Heart, Spokane, July 1, 2000.
