Franciscan Sisters merge communities

the Inland Register

(From the May 22, 2003 edition of the Inland Register)

The Franciscan Sisters of Ringwood, N.J., have resolved to merge their community with that of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, one of the communities of women Religious who minister in the Spokane Diocese.

The Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia count some 700 members; the Franciscan Sisters of Ringwood numbered 28. The vote was taken March 8 in Ringwood; the Vatican confirmed the decision April 14.

According to Sister Lynn Lavin, Congregational Minister of the Philadelphia Sisters, “The primary motivation for this merger process between our congregations is the preservation of our Franciscan charism. Our commitment of living the Gospel life in the spirit of Francis and Clare of Assisi is strong. We want that legacy to be sustained and strengthened for future generations.”
