On the mornng of May 5, Donna Hanson, Director of Catholic Charities, led co-workers, volunteers, dignitaries, and fund providers in the official ground-breaking and naming of a new family housing development located in Othello, Wash.

Sponsored by Catholic Charities through a recently formed entity, Catholic Housing Services of Eastern Washington (CHSEW), the completed project will provide 26 units of affordable accommodations for families working in the agricultural industry.

Currently there is a waiting list of 237 applicants for safe, decent, affordable housing in the area.

According to Father Miguel Mejia, pastor of Othello’s Sacred Heart Parish, the long-awaited housing is needed by the community and will influence many lives, especially those of the children living there.

The complex will surround a central commons area with a patio and playground.

The housing development, scheduled to begin by the end of May, and should take about nine months to complete.
