(From the July 3, 2003 edition of the Inland Register)
Catholic Charities announced this week that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation had committed $400,000 to Charities’ building campaign for St. Anne Children and Family Center.
The gift will enable a leap forward in fund-raising for the project, which has an estimated price tag of $2.5 million. The campaign includes relocating the Center to property near Sacred Heart Medical Center. A new facility will be erected there, at Fifth and Browne in Spokane.
The new Center will be a collaborative effort between Catholic Charities, Sacred Heart Medical Center and Gonzaga University. SHMC is donating the land for the project.
Including the Gates Foundation commitment, about $1.8 million has been raised so far.
St. Anne has minister to the varying needs of families for some 60 years.
The Center was founded in 1943. The new facility will continue to work to meet the needs of contemporary families, capable of serving some 200 children of all faiths and backgrounds in its child-care program.
Plans also call for the new site to include space for Charities’ Childbirth and Parenting Alone (CAPA) Program, as well as such programs as counseling and Immigration and Senior Services.
According to Jaime Garcia, director of the Pacific Northwest program for the Gates Foundation, “St. Anne has a 60-year history of nurturing children and families. From child-care and maternity services to a receiving home for infants awaiting adoption and a residence for medically fragile children, St. Anne has provided exceptional services to vulnerable children and families of Eastern Washington.
“We admire Catholic Charities’ mission of service to those in need, regardless of creed,” said Garcia. “We are delighted to partner with Catholic Charities in supporting this new opportunity for St. Anne.”
