Eastern Washington organizations receive funding from Operation Rice Bowl grants
the Inland Register
(From the July 3, 2003 edition of the Inland Register)
During Lent each year, families are encouraged to participate in Operation Rice Bowl (ORB): eating reduced or more simple meals, reflecting on and learning about poverty issues around the world, and donating the money saved on food to Catholic Relief Services (CRS).
CRS is the U.S. bishops’ overseas development and emergency relief agency.
Funds collected through ORB are split. Seventy-five percent is given to the national CRS office for global hunger initiatives. The other 25 percent remains in the diocese for local nutrition and hunger relief organizations.
Some $5,000 was awarded recently in local grants by the Catholic Relief Services diocesan advisory committee to seven Eastern Washington hunger relief and nutrition organizations. The funding was distributed to the following:
• Addy Rescue Mission, Addy.
• Ferry County Community Food Bank, Republic.
• Garfield County Food Bank, Pomeroy.
• Loon Lake Food Pantry, Loon Lake.
• St. Vincent de Paul Family Service Center, Spokane.
• Spokane AIDS Network, Spokane.
• Women and Children’s Free Restaurant, Spokane.
To date, over $26,000 has been given by parishes, individuals and schools to assist in hunger relief and development efforts, both locally and globally.
