Nineteen men enrolled in seminary formation for Spokane Diocese

This year finds 19 men in various stages of seminary studies for the Diocese of Spokane.

The 19 are participating in priestly formation programs in the Northwest – in Washington and Oregon – as well as Washington, D.C.; Rome; and Louvain, Belgium.

Here are short biographies of this year’s seminarians. Please keep them and all other seminarians and priests in prayer.

Peter Amah Peter Amah is a native of Nigeria who is currently studying theology at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Peter spent part of his summer working with Father Dan Barnett at St. Francis Xavier and St. Patrick parishes in Spokane.

Jeremy Burris Jeremy Burris is currently attending Spokane Community College in preparation for admission to Gonzaga University in January. Jeremy is a musician who plays bass guitar at St. Aloysius Parish.

Luis Alfonso Castillo Rivera Luis Alfonso Castillo Rivera is a native of Mexico who will complete the English as a Second Language (ESL) at Gonzaga University in December. He then will resume his theology studies at Mount Angel Seminary, St. Benedict, Ore.

Michael Ishida Mike Ishida is in his second year of theology at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He completed the pre-theology program through Bishop White Seminary at Gonzaga University. Mike has a degree in nursing and, before coming to seminary, was employed as a cardiac nurse.

Ricardo Flores Mendez Ricardo Flores Mendez was born and raised in Mexico. He is enrolled in the ESL program at Gonzaga University.

David Kuttner David Kuttner was born and raised in Spokane, where he and his family are members of St.Thomas More Parish. David completed the pre-theology program at Bishop White Seminary and Gonzaga University. He has completed one year of theology at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

Miguel Gustave Ruiz Juárez Miguel Gustave Ruiz Juárez studied theology at the Seminario Hispano in Mexico City. He is currently studying English in ESL program at Gonzaga University. Gustavo will complete the program at GU and Bishop White this year and then move on to complete his theology studies.

Sean Harrell Sean Harrell is a Spokane native, a graduate of Gonzaga Preparatory School and a freshman at Gonzaga University. He and his family are parishioners of St. Mary Parish in Spokane Valley.

Ralph HetzelRalph Hetzel is a parishioner at St. Anne Parish in Medical Lake. Ralph spent some time with the National Guard. He will enter Bishop White Seminary in December to begin the pre-theology program

Keith Holowecky Keith Holowecky is a native of Oregon. He has a background in software engineering and is currently enrolled in the pre-theology program at Bishop White Seminary.

Kris Leistritz Kris Leistritz was born and raised in Pasco where his family belongs to St. Patrick Parish. Kris is a sophomore at Gonzaga University.

James Peak James Peak comes to the Spokane Diocese from Idaho. James recently retired from active service in the army, where he attained the rank of captain. After completing philosophy studies at Gonzaga University, James is currently studying theology at the North American College in Rome.

Kenneth St. Hilaire Kenneth St. Hilaire is from Pasco, where he and his family are parishioners at St. Patrick Parish. He graduated from Central Washington University in Ellensburg with an engineering degree, studied Philosophy at Gonzaga University, and is currently studying theology at the North American College in Rome.

Alejandro Zepeda Alejandro Zepeda is a native of Mexico. He completed the ESL program at Gonzaga University and he is now in his second year of theology at the American College in Louvain, Belgium.

Lucas Tomson Lucas Tomson is a graduate of Whitworth College and a native of Idaho. Luke has worked at St. Augustine Parish, Spokane, and currently is studying theology at North American College in Rome.

Vincent Van Dao Nguyen Vincent Van Dao Nguyen is a native of Vietnam. He comes to the diocese from Southern France, where he completed his theology studies. Vincent is studying English at Gonzaga University.

Kevin Oiland Kevin Oiland was born and raised in Spokane. He is a parishioner at Mary Queen Parish. Kevin is completing his senior year at Bishop White Seminary and Gonzaga University.

Pedro Bautista Peraza Pedro Bautista Peraza is completing his fourth year of theology at the American College in Louvain, Belgium. He is scheduled to be ordained a deacon in December and a priest in August 2004.

Matthew Nicks Matthew Nicks was born and raised in Spokane. He and his family are members of St. Peter Parish. Matt graduated from Bishop White Seminary at Gonzaga University with a degree in philosophy and is now in his first year of theology at North American College in Rome.
