Radio programming offers break from commercial Christmas fare

The Diocese of Spokane is underwriting Christmas programming at KPBX, Spokane’s public radio station, 91.1-FM

Programming offerings this year include: Dec. 19: 11 a.m.: A Great Miracle Happened Here. A Chanukah conversation between Rabbi Ismar Schorsch and Larry Josephson, mixed with music of the holiday.

Dec. 20: 1 p.m.: Fascinatin’ Rhythm: Songs of Christmas, from the golden age of American song.

Dec. 21: 3 p.m.: Thistle and Shamrock’s program of Irish and Celtic music is dedicated to tunes of the season.

Dec. 22: 11 a.m.: A Vermont Christmas, with Counterpoint, an 11-member choral ensemble, performing in Burlington. Repeats Dec. 25 at 4 p.m.

Dec. 23: 8 p.m.: Treasured Classics Christmas, with festive music from around the world.

Dec. 24
• 9 a.m.: Handel’s Messiah, recorded live from Symphony Hall in Boston.
• 10 a.m.: Performance Today presents its annual “Christmas Around the Country” concert recap.
• 11 a.m.: Holiday Pops: Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops.
• Noon: Chanukah Lights, with readings of stories that explore the meaning of the Jewish feast of Chanukah
• 7 p.m.-midnight: Christmas in Spokane, highlights of Spokane-area Christmas concerts.

Dec. 25
• Midnight-2 a.m.: St. Olaf Christmas Festival, from St. Olaf College in Minnesota. A capella choral works, traditional and modern.
• 9 a.m.: Christmas with More-house and Spelman Glee Clubs, presenting a mix of spirituals, carols and sacred texts.
• 6 p.m.: Jonathan Winters performs A Christmas Carol.
• 7 p.m.: Record Shelf: Hallelujah, Take One, featuring great moments from Handel’s Messiah.
• 10 p.m.: Jazz Piano Christmas: In Concert at the Kennedy Center, with keyboard and vocal interpretation of holiday standards.
