Pedro Bautista-Peraza, a seminarian studying for the Diocese of Spokane, was one of three men ordained to the diaconate Dec. 6 in the chapel of the Sacred Heart in Louvain, Belgium.
Deacon Bautista-Peraza is a fourth year theologian studying at the Catholic University of Louvain.
The celebrant for the ordination Mass was Archbishop Thomas Kelly OP of the Archdiocese of Louisville, Ky.
An ordination vigil was celebrated on Friday evening in the American College chapel. At that time the three seminarians promised fidelity to the pope and belief in the teachings of the Catholic Church. The oath of fidelity was made before the college’s rector, Father Kevin Codd, a priest of the Spokane Diocese.
Several Spokane clergy and seminarians attended the ordination ceremony. Deacon Don Whitney from Mary Queen Parish, Spokane, was deacon for the vigil Mass. Father Paul Vevik, pastor of Mary Queen, celebrated the Mass and assisted Bautista-Peraza with vesting.
Other concelebrants included Father Darrin Connall, the Spokane Diocese’s Director of Seminarians and Rector of Bishop White Seminary; Msgr. John Steiner, pastor of St. Mary Parish in Spokane Valley and co-Vicar General of the Spokane Diocese; and Father Tom Connolly, pastor of the parishes in Pomeroy, Dayton and Waitsburg.
Spokane seminarians attending the celebration were Alejandro Zepeda from the American College, Louvain, and Kenny St. Hilaire, Jimmy Peak, Luke Tomson, and Matthew Nicks from the North American College in Rome.
Deacon Bautista-Peraza is scheduled to be ordained to the priesthood by Bishop William Skylstad on Aug. 6, 2004, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. The public is invited.
The other seminarians who were ordained deacons are Joseph Hoang, Diocese of Orange, Calif.; and Toan Do, the Archdiocese of Louisville, Ky
