Nominations sought for Community Service Award

the Inland Register

(From the Jan. 15, 2004 edition of the Inland Register)

Four years ago the Catholic Foundation created the Catholic Community Service Award, a special award to recognize individuals throughout Eastern Washington who give of their time, skills and financial resources to parishes, programs, schools or religious education programs. Pastors, parish staff persons, principals, directors of religious education, programs directors and parishioners are all invited to nominate people to receive this award.

Since the award was started, 62 people and groups have been nominated to receive it. Recipients include: Sofie Arabelos from Dayton (now deceased), Cecilia Clark from Nespelem, and Michael Anselmo, Leon & Irene Bailly, Pete Brickner, Deacon Thomas Buckman, Caritas Center, Richard Lee Cunningham, Eleanor Finley, the Marthas and Josephs of Immaculate Heart Retreat Center and Bob Miller and Friends, all from Spokane.

Nominees for the award must:

• Be an individual living within the boundaries of the Diocese of Spokane (need not be Catholic);
• Be a group or organization serving within the boundaries of the Diocese of Spokane;
• Give volunteer service and/or monetary donations in the local Catholic Community;
• Be of high moral character and exemplary values.

Nomination forms were mailed out before Christmas from the Foundation office. If you haven’t received a form you can obtain one by calling the Catholic Foundation at 509-358-4280 or logging onto their website: www.spokanecatholicfoundation.com.

Forms also can be received and returned by e-mail. To receive an e-mailed form, send a request to skocharhook@dioceseofspokane.org.

Everyone nominated for the award receives a special Certificate of Nomination. Recipients receive a commemorative plaque.

Nominees for the 2004 award will be honored at a special grant and award luncheon on Thursday, June 10, when Foundation grants will be given out and the Catholic Community Service Award recipients will be announced.

Nominations must be postmarked by Feb. 29, 2004, or received by that date if the form is e-mailed, to be considered for the Catholic Community Service Award for 2004.
