Parishioners continue generous response to ‘Here I am, Lord, send me’ seminary campaign

by Andrew Dziuban, for the Inland Register

(From the April 29, 2004 edition of the Inland Register)

The Campaign for the Education of Seminarians has now generated $7.1 million in pledges from over 3,900 generous families all across Eastern Washington. This represents over 70 percent of the $10 million goal that will fund the goals of the campaign:

• Add to the Endowment for the Education of Seminarians.
• A new Bishop White Seminary.
• The 2004 Annual Catholic Appeal.
• Operating Costs of the present seminarian program.

The campaign will continue with activities in the third block of parishes through June.

The 11 parishes in Block I have raised over 111 percent of the combined goal of $992,780 from 42 percent of the families in those parishes. Block II parishes are still in the active phase of the campaign and have amassed pledges totaling $4,328,229 from 22 percent of parish families.

A typical diocesan campaign like this one can expect between 30-40 percent of all families in the diocese to make a gift.

Block II parishes are continuing the follow-up phase of the campaign plan and will increase participation as the combined Block II goal of $6,297,858 is reached.

Receptions for Block III parishes have already begun and will continue over the next few weeks. Every family in the Block III parishes is encouraged to attend one of these informational gatherings to hear firsthand about the campaign and to ask questions.

These campaign receptions offer a valuable explanation of how the money raised in this historic endeavor will be allocated and the importance of having an Endowment for the Education of Seminarians. This endowment will go a long way to ensure that our future priests have the economic resources to courageously answer the call to serve God’s Kingdom.

Each year the diocese spends between $450,000 and $550,000 on the education of seminarians. These funds come from the Annual Catholic Appeal that annually raises around $2 million. It is easy to see that an endowment to fund the education of seminarians will greatly ease the financial burden the diocese faces while enabling funds to be directed toward other ministries.

As the campaign continues to near its goal it is important that each and every Catholic family in the Diocese of Spokane give prayerful consideration to what they can do for the success of this campaign. While not everyone can give the same amount, we can all make an equal sacrifice in the form of a pledge extended over four years.

If you have questions about the campaign, how to make your gift using stock or other securities or about setting up a gift that can pay you an income for the rest of your life, please contact Steve Kocharhook, Director of Development for the Diocese of Spokane, at 509-358-4283.

Your prayers and continued support of the campaign are greatly appreciated.

(Andrew Dziuban is Regional Campaign Director for the Campaign for the Education of Seminarians.)
