Diocesan financial report to be published in next IR
by Michael Miller, for the Inland Register
(From the April 29, 2004 edition of the Inland Register)
As part of his commitment to transparency in his ministry, Bishop Skylstad has had the Inland Register publish the complete diocesan financial report every year.
This year’s report has been delayed, compared to the timing of previous years.
Normally this presentation of diocesan financial information is accompanied by a detailed commentary from the bishop. This year the Bishop’s Finance Council recommended that they write the financial report commentary, since they are representatives of the people of the Diocese of Spokane who are charged with advising the bishop on financial matters of the diocese. Bishop Skylstad accepted that recommendation.
The annual financial report contains a great deal of information regarding a very complex organization. The information is comprised of restricted and unrestricted funds, endowed funds, parish savings, diocesan operating funds, diocesan physical assets, restricted physical assets and other monies that flow through the diocesan books.
Given all of this, it can be difficult to see the real status of the operation of the Catholic Diocese of Spokane with all its complexity, especially when considering the cost of the ongoing litigation and potential settlement liabilities that exist.
At present, plans call for the financial report to be included in the May 20 edition of the Inland Register. The report will be accompanied by commentary from members of the Bishop’s Finance Council.
(Michael Miller is Bishop’s Secretary for Diocesan Business Affairs.)
