Msgr. Pearson named Vicar for Priests
the Inland Register
(From the July 1, 2004 edition of the Inland Register)
Msgr. Robert Pearson has been named the Vicar for Priests for the Diocese of Spokane.
He begins his new duties July 1. He retires – briefly – June 30, as pastor of St. Augustine Parish in Spokane.
Msgr. Pearson is no stranger to the job; he was the diocese’s Vicar for Priests from 1985 to 1990. Since then, the position has been vacant.
However, as Bishop Skystad’s responsibilities increase on the national level, there is more need to tend to the needs of the diocesan priests, said the monsignor. He was nominated by his fellow priests and agreed to fill the position upon his retirement as pastor.
As Vicar for Priests, Msgr. Pearson serves as the chief representative for the bishop in matters concerning priest personnel: the professional care of priests in active ministry as well as those priests who have achieved senior priest status. He will be responsible for maintaining communication with priests and parish administrators on an ongoing basis. He also will ensure that their needs are being met and that all transitions are smooth.
Msgr. Pearson will reside at Bishop White Seminary, helping out with the priestly formation program.
The role as Vicar for Priests will be added to his duties as Director of Continuing Education for Priests, a position he kept after retirement from parish work.
“I’m going to be a busy retired priest,” said Msgr. Pearson.
He said he looks forward to continuing his work with the priests of the Diocese of Spokane.
“I like working with priests,” he said. “I’ve done it for a long time.”
He was ordained May 29, 1965.
