PORT TOWNSEND – Father Gary Sumpter, parochial vicar of St. Mary Star of the Sea Parish, celebrates his 25th anniversary of priestly ordination this year.
Spokane Diocese parishioners may remember Father Sumpter; he was originally ordained for the Church in Eastern Washington, by Bishop Lawrence Welsh. He later moved to minister in the Diocese of Santa Rosa, Calif., before returning to the Northwest and ministry in the Archdiocese of Seattle.
PORTLAND – The National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother – better known as The Grotto, located in northeast Portland – will host a Marian conference in mid-August, honoring the 150th anniversary of the declaration of the Immaculate Conception.
The conference, “Mary and the Ambiguity of Life,” is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Aug. 13-14. Cost of the conference is $35 per person for Friday and Saturday; $15 for Friday evening only; $25 for Saturday only.
Among those speaking are Dr. Elaine Park, academic dean and professor of Biblical studies at Mount Angel Seminary in Oregon: “Mary and the New Testament”; Servite Father Joseph Cheah, “Mary and the Ambiguity of Life in the Third and First Worlds”; and Servite Father Bob Warsey, adjunct professor of dogmatic history at the Catholic Theological Union, Chicago: “The Immaculate Conception: A Jubilee Perspective.”
