St. Thomas More parishioners called to identify, simplify, and focus gifts
the Inland Register
(From the Sept. 9, 2004 edition of the Inland Register)
Most pastors are faced with the dilemma of having to call upon a small number of parishioners to do the bulk of the volunteer work of their parish. Not because the few are the only ones with the time or talent, but the parish is not organized in a way that takes advantage of the talents of all its members.
Many parishioners simply donít know of the need, or lack an invitation or the encouragement to help out. So a few parishioners end up guiding almost all of the activities of the parish, whereas others might do the job just as well Ė perhaps better!
St. Thomas More (STM) Parish, Spokane, is embarking on a professionally-designed program to help parishioners identify and make use of the gifts that they possess. Some of these charisms may be God-given endowments from Baptism and Confirmation, whereas others might be talents developed through education or employment. Whatever the source, as Christians it is important to discern what those gifts are, and consider how they can be used in the service of others.
The STM program has been designed to reach out, involve, and deepen the faith life of every parishioner. As such, it will simplify the lives of those who are overly involved while providing an opportunity for others to discern what unique gifts they have and where they are needed. The no-charge program will also be open to priests and interested parishioners from other parishes, as well as to non-Catholics who pre-register.
The Called & Gifted Workshop will be held at the St. Thomas More Parish Activity Center Friday evening, Oct. 22, and Saturday, Oct. 23. The Friday session runs from 7-9:30 pm and the Saturday session from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Registration forms are available at all Spokane parish churches.
For more information, contact Carol Moore, the Workshop Chairperson at 467-4483 or the STM Parish Office at 466-0220.
