The funeral Mass for Sister Mary Chewning was celebrated in the chapel at the Convent of the Holy Names, Marylhurst, Ore., on Aug. 19. Sister Mary died Aug. 14 at the age of 85.
She was a native of Grand Junction, Colo. Her family moved to Portland in 1927. She was educated in Holy Names schools until she entered the Holy Names novitiate in 1936. She made her profession of vows in 1938 and began teaching in schools throughout Oregon and Washington, a ministry that lasted some 42 years.
After teaching, she began to minister among the elderly of downtown Portland, Ore., visiting them in their homes, helping the sick, checking up on the lonely, bringing Communion to the shut-ins. In 1992 her work was honored with the Oregon Gerontological Associationís Outstanding Senior Advocate award.
