(From the Dec. 16, 2004 edition of the Inland Register)

Since the end of October 1,667 donors have contributed $93,845 to the World Missions Collection. For a parish listing, click here - Adobe Reader software required.

This collection, taken up in all parishes throughout the Diocese of Spokane, raises funds for the mission work of the Catholic Church.

Whether it is humanitarian aid through Catholic Relief Services to victims of natural disasters, civil wars, or military actions; or bringing the Word of God to people who do not know Him through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith; or helping to rebuild churches and infrastructure in Central and Eastern Europe, the Collection supports missionary activities throughout the world.

Six weeks into the collection, contributions are about $12,000 behind last year’s numbers at this time.

Money raised from this collection does not come to the Diocese of Spokane. Instead, it is held in a special custodial account to be distributed to the various recipients early in 2005.

The recipients of the funds raised through this collection are: Catholic Relief Services, Collection for the Holy Land, Works of the Holy Father and the Apostolic See, Catholic Near East Welfare Association, Society for the Propagation of the Faith, the Church in Central and Eastern Europe, and the diocese’s Guatemala Mission. Because of the way these funds are solicited, they can be used for no other purpose.

Money from the 2003 World Missions Collection was disbursed in the following manner:

• Catholic Relief Services: $16,405.
• Works of the Holy Father: $11,580.
• Catholic Near East Welfare Association: $3,000.
• Catholic Church in Eastern Europe: $2,000.
• Collection for the Holy Land: $2,000.
• Society for Propagation of the Faith: $15,440.
• Diocesan Guatemala Mission: $46,320.

Contributions can still be made to the World Missions Collection by placing a gift in the Offertory collection at Sunday Mass or mailing it to: Development Office, Diocese of Spokane, PO Box 1453, Spokane, WA 99210-1453.

Checks can be made payable to: World Missions Collection.
