At Catholic Charities’ Childbirth and Parenting Alone (CAPA) program, the Doula (mother mentor) Project has been helping single parents for years, but now with a new twist: some of the doulas get together regularly to pray for the young women with whom they’ve been matched. They also make a commitment to pray individually for their new mom every day.
According to therapist Kent Hoffman, who supervises the program, “Prayer ... gives us courage to stay centered, keep loving, and be beacons of hope in the world.”
The doulas clearly find the program empowering, and are aware that their efforts extend beyond that which is immediately apparent.
“When we allow God to shine God’s light in us, it beams,” said Hoffman. “And we need that in the world.”
