This past year the Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Spokane conducted a diocesan wide $10 million fund-raising effort, the “Here I am, Lord, Send Me” Campaign for the Education of Seminarians. The campaign was a great success, with pledges to date in excess of the $10 million goal.
Many donors to the campaign made pledges over a four year period. The first year of the pledge period has been completed, which fully funded the 2004 Annual Catholic Appeal as well as the operating expenses of the seminary program for two years.
The other two components of the campaign consist of $4.5 million for the education endowment and $3 million for the building of Bishop White Seminary. Many donors have asked when construction on the new seminary will begin. The simple answer is that all $3 million will need to be collected before the groundbreaking.
With nearly $500,000 collected to date for the building, the expectation is that it will take another 10-12 months for people to fulfill their pledges to the building portion of the campaign. It is expected to take another 36 months for the pledges to the campaign to fully fund the $4.5 million endowment portion.
It is important to remember that the diocese’s Chapter 11 Reorganization has no impact on the funds raised by the Catholic Foundation – funds such as contributions to the seminary campaign. The Catholic Foundation is a nonprofit corporation separately incorporated from the Diocese of Spokane under the laws of the State of Washington. The Campaign for the Education of Seminarians is a restricted fund. All payments made on pledges to the campaign must be used for campaign purposes only.
The Inland Register will continue to publish regular campaign updates. Additional information on the campaign can be obtained by logging on to the website of the Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Spokane.
