Cathedral Choir to perform during Corpus Christi flower festival
the Inland Register
(From the May 19, 2005 edition of the Inland Register)
Music @ Lourdes, in conjunction with the Cathedral’s Corpus Christi flower festival, will present a concert featuring the Cathedral Choir on Sunday, May 29 at 2 p.m. at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, 1115 W. Riverside Ave. The concert is free to the public; a free-will offering will be accepted.
The Corpus Christi concert is a long-standing tradition for the Cathedral Choir. “Our church has a rich and wide-range of music that can be showcased outside of our liturgies,” said Max Mendez, director of music at the Cathedral. “This year’s concert will feature music of the church year, including compositions by Josquin des Pres, J.S. Bach, John Rutter, and many others,” including a piece by Northwest composer Michael Kissenger, titled “The Sacred Cantata.”
“The Sacred Cantata” is a set of eight sacred songs composed in a variety of musical styles that range from a jazz waltz to traditional Spirituals.
Kissenger, a resident of Vancouver, Wash., is a composer and Artistic Director of Bravo! Vancouver.
Randel Wagner, current director of Choral and Vocal studies at EWU, will be the featured soloist on Kissenger’s composition.
The Cathedral Choir is the choir in residence at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. The choir serves at the 11 a.m. Mass from September to June each year. The choir also participates in the liturgies of Christmas and Holy Week.
“I am very lucky to work with a talented and committed group of singers and ministers,” said Mendez. “In addition to preparing music for Sunday liturgies, this ensemble is willing to perform this annual concert as a way to celebrate this great feast day with the whole Cathedral and diocesan community. This certainly shows a great sign of faith and love.”
