St. Paschal Parish hosts Senior Health Fair next month

As the human body ages, maintaining good health becomes increasingly challenging.

It is hard to know what steps to take to protect the body from the rigors of aging, and when something goes wrong, it is often difficult to know where to turn.

To complicate matters further, the cost of medical care is rising, making the prevention of ailments an even bigger issue.

St. Paschal Parish in Spokane Valley is seeking to aid senior citizens in addressing all these medical issues, and more.

On Sat. June 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the parish is sponsoring a free Senior Services Informational Health Fair. The fair will take place in the St. Paschal school hall at 2523 N. Park Rd.

Over 25 vendors from throughout the Spokane area will be offering details and demonstrations of their products and services, and providing valuable information to seniors about issues that have a direct impact on their quality of life.

The vendors will have information on everything from blood pressure and diabetes awareness to life insurance and courses available for seniors at the local community colleges.

Seniors can take advantage of free eyeglass repair at the Lens Crafters booth or travel to the Jones Pharmacy and Home Health Care booth to have their walkers, canes and wheelchairs repaired. The parish nurses booth will provide free blood pressure checks and Community Health Education and Resources will provide blood sugar screening and information about diabetes.

Rollers Professional Hair & Nail Care will have a booth explaining their mobile cosmetic services and Rizzuto’s Shoes from Northtown Mall will be at the fair providing information about their free diabetic shoes.

Other booths will include information about diabetic supplies, senior transportation information, senior volunteering, audio testing, and much more. Though the vendors’ expertise vary, each of them has information that directly pertains to quality of life.

Vicky Moore is the parish’s Senior Services Coordinator and has spent the last several months organizing this unique event. For Moore, working with senior citizens is a labor of love.

“They’re the glue that holds the parish together,” said Moore. “They’re the ones that started the parish, and anything we can do to help them, to give back to them is wonderful. This is a way to thank them for blazing the trail.”

Other events organized for senior citizens at St. Paschal Parish include weekly crafts, occasional trips to Greenbluff for lunch and plant purchases, a senior dance twice a year, and other seasonal activities.

“I hope it makes them feel appreciated like they should be,” said Moore. “Plus, all these activities that get the seniors interacting with one another, and with other members of the parish really builds community.”
