The Social Justice Committee of Holy Family Parish, Clarkston, set as its primary goal for 2004- 2005 to reinstate Legal Aid Service in Asotin County for low-income residents.
Since 1988, there has been no local legal services agency for low-income individuals and families in Asotin County. The goal of the parish’s Legal Services Program is to provide legal services to these people.
Objectives include screening requests for legal assistance, facilitating access to and preparation of appropriate forms to reduce stress on clients and on the court docket, coordinating services to assure productive use of client and attorney times, and offering monthly family law clinics conducted by attorneys.
Through collaboration, communication, and skilled grant-writing, Legal Aid began operation at the beginning of May.
The group’s vision statement includes these words: “As a community of believers, we reflect Jesus’ example by individually and collectively addressing the vital issues of today. These economic, political, cultural and social concerns impact everyone’s self-respect and dignity. This leads us to educate and encourage fellow parishioners to respond.”
Georgina Kinyon, hired as coordinator, is temporarily working out of Holy Family Parish Center.
To date, grants have been received from a number of sources, including the Benedictine Sisters of the Monastery of St. Gertrude in Cottonwood, Idaho; Legal Foundation of Washington; Catholic Campaign for Human Development; Northwest Foundation; YWCA of Lewiston-Clarkston; and Asotin County Superior Court Discretionary Fund.
